Guava is probably the last flavor I would think of when it comes to cakes. I mean, we're so used to the usual suspects of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, mango, and what-have-you but what the heck, someone is making guava cake!
Recently my wife stumbled upon M Artisanal Cakes (or Monique Cakes PH) on Instagram and we immediately zeroed in on Helen's Guava Cake. Its mint green color sure makes for an eye-catching choice, not to mention the eight slices of fresh guava atop it. The cake loosely mimics the actual fruit with its green exterior that reveals a lovely pink color inside. Unlike the fruit, though, the cake is seedless. 😁
There's a thin sheet of guava jam, along with a much thicker layer of icing, sandwiched between two layers of chiffon cake. The cake itself is light and moist while the icing is thankfully not buttercream, (which I would have hated for its fatty density). The guava flavor, on the other hand, is very much alive but not overpowering. Personally, however, I would have preferred a bit more of the jam (like another sheet perhaps) although I like how the dessert as a whole is not too sweet.
Overall, Helen's Guava Cake is a delight to eat. It's not heavy, has the right amount of sweetness, and is never overwhelming. Choosing guava as a flavor is also something not particularly common, so Monique Cakes definitely hit it with this one. Needless to say, this is a cake worth trying, especially as summer approaches.
